EuROPE 2024

A collection of photos spanning the course of four months and six countries, these hold a particularly special place in my heart because the entire time, I was completely alone. Being human and therefore an inherently social animal, I was not of course immune to making friends along the way. But day in and day out, I wound my hours away in entirely my own company, rising when I wanted, walking where I wanted, eating where I wanted, taking photos of what I wanted. As a lifelong chronic people-pleaser, this may well have been the first time I had ever permitted myself to commit such an act, and these photos are that hedonistic result, borne from carrying my heavy, heavy, heavy camera with me absolutely everywhere I went, even (and especially) when it meant inconveniencing myself.

These final photos are particularly special to me as they depict the county on the South West coast of England in which I spent my childhood summers. I hadn’t revisited this place since two years before my migration to the US and visiting again as an adult, seeing these places that felt so magical and fairy-like in my youth, was an experience I’ve never had before and made me more emotional than I’d care to admit aloud. The mysticism of childhood nostalgia and the unique experience I was privileged enough to have being raised in the countryside had largely been lost to me in my uprooting, and to be able experience those feelings again, swim in the same water, breathe the same air, eat at the same places — it’s something I can hardly put into words.
